Rattlesnake Arches near Fruita features 35 natural sandstone arches tucked deep within the red rock canyons of Western Colorado.
Located near Fruita in the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness, Rattlesnake Arches is home to 35 natural sandstone arches — the second-largest concentration of arches in the country behind Arches National Park. This hidden Western Colorado gem offers stunning canyon views, unique red rock formations, and a much less crowded experience than many of Colorado and Utah’s more popular hiking destinations.
There are two main ways to access the arches. Most visitors take the rough 4×4 road to the upper trailhead, which requires a high-clearance vehicle and shortens the hike to approximately 3–4 miles round trip. Without a 4×4 vehicle, hikers can start from the lower Pollock Bench Trailhead, but the hike becomes much longer at around 14 miles round trip.
Along the trail, you’ll pass several incredible arches including Cedar Tree Arch, East Rim Arch, and Rattlesnake Arch itself. Summer temperatures can get extremely hot, so bringing plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks, and sturdy hiking shoes is highly recommended. Whether you’re looking for adventure, photography spots, or one of the most unique hikes near Grand Junction and Fruita, Rattlesnake Arches is a must-see destination for your Western Colorado summer bucket list.
